Quinn wants pro athletes to review BPS sports programs

One of Buffalo’s newest school board members, Larry Quinn, is well-known throughout town for his former role as a part owner of the Buffalo Sabres.

Now, in one of his first proposals as a board member, Quinn wants to apply a professional level of expertise to the Buffalo Public Schools athletic department.

At the last board meeting, Quinn proposed creating a task force that will review the district’s athletic operations, everything from staffing to student interest and performance. And he plans to bring in some heavy hitters from the professional realm to conduct the analysis.

“I don’t just want professional athletes,” he said. “I want people who are really good.”

The idea was well-received by fellow board members, some of whom said they might have some names to contribute. Newcomer Patti Pierce also made a point to ask for representation from female athletes.

Board members will be submitting their ideas for task force members to district administrators who oversee athletics.
