Way is paved for sale of Genesee County Nursing Home

BATAVIA – The Genesee County Nursing Home, battered by annual operating losses, is a step nearer to a sale or lease, the County Legislature decided when it met Wednesday.

The home with 160 skilled- nursing beds and an 80-patient domiciliary care unit was declared surplus property. That paves the way for an immediate for-sale sign.

The county has provided nursing home care since the 19th century, but the reimbursement for patients on Medicaid is $100 per patient per day short of the actual cost of care, officials said. That has resulted in millions – $4 million last year alone – in operating losses that had to be covered by the county’s general fund.

In its request for proposals, the county will seek an experienced new owner-operator that will ensure for staff, patients and families “continued long-term viability for the facility.”

Orleans County, with which Genesee shares several health care positions and services, sold a smaller facility this year for $7.8 million.

Other resolutions passed by the legislators include:

• Appointing Michael J. Eula of Niagara Falls as county historian to succeed Susan L. Conklin. Eula, with a doctorate in history, has spent most of his career teaching in California. He also holds a law degree. The position pays $45,682.

• Named Jerry Adler as county public defender to succeed Gary A. Horton, who retired. Adler, a senior assistant public defender, has held the post for the four months since Horton retired. His salary will be $92,500.

• Accepted two state grants totaling $417,795 for the county’s Children’s Advocacy Center and Genesee Justice Victim Program.

• Approved a $1,150,000 renewal contract with Griffith Oil Co. of Rochester to supply fuel for county vehicles for one year. Most of the diesel fuel is used by the Highway Department.

• Appointed Lucine Kauffman, Elba supervisor, and Thomas Schubmehl, of Corfu, to the Planning Board.
