Lancaster native Joshua Gabriel commits to Canisius hockey

Canisius College hockey can add another verbal recruit to its list.

Joshua Gabriel announced on Twitter he has chosen to play for Golden Griffins.

The 18-year-old Lancaster native played in 37 games last season for the Buffalo Jr. Sabres, scoring 14 goals with 20 assists. His commitment is for the 2015-16 season.

And as always, schools can not comment on recruits until a National Letter of Intent is signed.

He joins five other players who have given verbal commitments to Canisius for the 2015-16 season. Those include Daniel LaFonataine (Buffalo Jr. Sabres), Matt Hoover (Cushing Academy), Cameron Heath (PAL Junior Islanders), James Mazza (PAL Junior Islanders) and Matthew Mcleod (Oakville Blades).

The Ice Griffs made their second-straight Atlantic Hockey championship game last season after winning their first title and ensuing NCAA berth in the 2013. The team opens play this season with a two-game series against Western Michigan at First Niagara Center Oct. 10-11. The Griffs then open up in their new home, the HarborCenter, hosting Ohio State Oct. 31 and Nov. 1.

The team features 10 seniors this season, including East Amherst native Matthew Grazen, who played two seasons with the Buffalo Junior Sabres before joining Canisius.
