Gloria Drake, active volunteer, member of clubs

Gloria Drake, of Williamsville, active as a volunteer, died Aug. 6 in Hospice of Buffalo Wells House at Beechwood Homes, Getzville. She was 89.

Born in Buffalo, she was the daughter of Gen. Allen F. Reif, commander of the 74th Regiment of New York Army National Guard. She was a 1942 graduate of Park School and earned an associate’s degree in medical secretarial sciences from Harcum College in Bryn Mawr, Pa., in 1944.

After marrying her first husband, Clement Horlein, head of Everett C. Horlein & Son, a meat-packing business, in 1949, she became a homemaker and mother of three children. He died in 1980.

In 1990, she married Charles Drake, founder of Arrow Fence Co. He died in 1998.

She was a longtime member of the Buffalo Canoe Club, Orchard Park Country Club, the Twentieth Century Club and the PEO (Promoting Educational Opportunities) Sisterhood of Williamsville, a philanthropic educational organization.

She was a volunteer for the Orchard Park Symphony, the Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, Our Lady of Victory Hospital and Tifft Nature Preserve.

She also was a member of a bridge club made up of high school girlfriends that met for more than 60 years.

She enjoyed the outdoors, golf, tennis, skiing, swimming, hiking, gardening, traveling, musical theater and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.

Survivors include two daughters, Lisa Horlein and Amy Loehndorf; a stepson, Kenneth; a stepdaughter, Debbie Rogers; and twin stepgrandchildren.

A memorial service will be arranged in September.
