North Collins, Lake Shore school districts move toward sharing transportation director

The North Collins School District has taken another step toward sharing a transportation director with the adjoining Lake Shore School District.

Sharing the position became an option when James Hourihan resigned as the district’s transportation supervisor in June. Officials saw an opportunity to save money by sharing the position, and Lake Shore indicated its willingness to share their director.

“This is one of the things the state is asking us to do to show that we’re trying to be efficient – fiscally responsible,” North Collins Superintendent Joan D. Thomas said. “To me this is something that would help us a great deal and get us through this next year.”

North Collins still needs a permanent head bus driver and Thomas received permission Tuesday from the School Board to advertise the post. The head bus driver will work with Lake Shore’s transportation director.

Thomas said the agreement with Lake Shore would be for one year, which would allow School Board members an opportunity to determine if the arrangement is working efficiently.

In another move Tuesday, the board decided it will host a public hearing on a veterans tax exemption when it meets Oct. 14. The exemption would provide tax breaks for military veterans living in the district.

According to the state Department of Taxation and Finance, 95 percent of counties and municipalities in the state offer the exemption.

School districts, however, were not allowed to offer the exemption until this year, officials said. Locally, the Gowanda and Southwestern school districts have voted to allow exemptions.

Thomas suggested that the district offer the highest exemption possible, which would be in line with the town.

“The recommendation to us was to follow suit with the town,” Thomas said.

Board members also said they support the full exemption for veterans.
