Hanover gets permit to dredge Cattaraugus Creek Harbor

SILVER CREEK – A state Department of Environmental Conservation permit has been granted to the Town of Hanover to dredge Cattaraugus Creek Harbor.

The permit was announced during Monday’s meeting of the Town Board in Town Hall.

“Once we get the Army Corps of Engineers permit we will be good to go,” said town Highway Superintendent Steve D’Angelo, who noted the Army Corps of Engineers usually agrees with the DEC on permit requests, so he does not anticipate a problem.

Dredging work is expected to be done before Sept. 20, which is the start of spawning season for some fish that are common to Cattaraugus Creek.

The project will be paid for, so far, through two sources – $70,000 from the county and $100,000 form the state. The total cost has yet to be estimated, pending the amount of debris that has to be removed from the channel. The board expects to hire Dean Marine, a Michigan company, which has been contracted to dredge Barcelona Harbor in the Town of Westfield.

Officals announced the following job titles will be considered union: highway motor equipment operator, wastewater treatment plant operator, court clerk, inspection officer, laborers (full- or part-time) and deputy highway superintendent.

Supervisor Todd Johnson said a contract has yet to be negotiated.

In a related issue, Adam Graf was appointed as new motor equipment officer.

• Board members scheduled a public hearing on a law that would restrict cattle, swine, sheep, goats, mules or fowl from town roads. The hearing will be get underway at 7:35 p.m. Aug. 25.
