Ex-UB star Oliver impresses Chargers in debut

Running back Branden Oliver, UB’s all-time leading rusher, stamped himself a contender for a spot with the San Diego Chargers by rushing seven times for 64 yards and a touchdown in a 27-7 preseason victory over the Dallas Cowboys late Thursday night.

Oliver, a 5-foot-8, 210-pound undrafted free agent, scored on a second-quarter run of 16 yards and also broke free for a 27-yard gain.

“It was a play right up the gut and I hit it right up the gut,” Oliver said in describing the touchdown. “The fullback made his and everybody made their block, honestly. I have got to give all the glory to the guys that were blocking for me, honestly. I didn’t have to do much, except stay vertical. The cornerback came at the last second, so it was like two yards before I hit the end zone. I kept running my feet and I got in the end zone.”

At least one of his teammates took a more exuberant view of Oliver’s night.

“You want to talk about fun to watch, that guy is lightning in a bottle,” backup quarterback Kellen Clemens said on Chargers.com. “He is going to be a good back and I’m glad he is here.”

Oliver ran for 4,049 yards at UB, becoming just the 13th player in Mid-American Conference history to surpass that plateau. His 20 career 100-yard games are seven more than any other Bull.
