News right to offer both sides of debate

On July 28. The News published a letter from a reader that urged the paper to eliminate “false balance” in its publication. After rambling on about the deceptions of the tobacco industry, the writer got to his real point – climate change (formerly known as global warming). This is an area of some controversy and is anything but settled science.

Those preaching the currently popular view that unusual weather events are all a result of the misdeeds of mankind, and that those who dare to question this dogma are “outliers” whose opinions must be censored, are reminiscent of those who attempted to suppress Galileo’s teachings. My point is that a free and open discussion of ideas is a good thing and that hearing views that may not be popular may lead us to the truth.
