State inmate from Lockport denies stabbing charge

LOCKPORT – A Lockport man who is serving a state prison sentence for beating a man into unconsciousness was arraigned Wednesday in Niagara County Court on a new indictment charging him with a stabbing.

Chad A. Michalak, 33, of Elmwood Avenue, pleaded not guilty to first-degree assault and two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, one for having a knife and the other referring to a set of metal knuckles, Deputy District Attorney Doreen M. Hoffmann said.

John Cuillo was stabbed Jan. 22 in a parking lot on Locust Street in Lockport. That occurred five days after Michalak had pleaded guilty in the beating case, which dated from December 2012.

On May 21, the day he was sentenced, Michalak turned down a pre-indictment plea offer in the stabbing case that would have limited his prison time for that to seven years. He now faces a 25-year maximum sentence if convicted of the knifing.
