Restaurant notes: Supper Club, Eden Ale House, more

Owners of the Buffalo Supper Club hope to open the Black Rock restaurant in early September, offering middle-class fare near the foot of Ontario Street.

Manager Kyle DeLuca said the place, at 2179 Niagara St., is the first restaurant from owners Christopher Williams and Aaron Osborne. It’ll be focused more on food than drinks, a place “working families can go for a nice, quiet sit-down meal,” DeLuca said. “That’s the clientele we’re going for, 25 and up, have a nice dinner and a couple of drinks without breaking the bank.”

The 60-seat place will be open for lunch, “but our entrées will be more on the dinner side,” ranging from $10 to $25.

The projected grand opening is Sept. 4, DeLuca said, though that date will depend on final inspections by city officials.

Open: The Ebenezer Ale House has extended its craft-beer-centered approach to Eden, opening the Eden Ale House last week at 8557 N. Main St.

They’re serving lunch and dinner, seating about 50 people, plus the patio, said Shawn Schweis, an owner. It used to be O’Brien’s Pub and Steakhouse, “but he was getting out of the business and we sat down with him,” said Schweis.

Schweis and Nathan Springer opened Ebenezer Ale House in June 2011, at 4348 Seneca St., West Seneca. That place has a patio deck out back now, with 21 craft beers on tap and a beer-infused tavern menu.

In Eden, the menu is the same, except for the absence of pizza, and tops out at $19.99 for a rack of ribs. The new place has 14 taps, mostly craft, said Schweis.

The partners have more crafty plans afoot. “We are in the process of working with Rusty Nickel Brewery, who will be operating in a building behind the Ebenezer Ale House, to offer custom brews, house beers,” for both locations, Schweis said.

Renaming: The soon-to-open Buffalo restaurant Blood and Sand is choosing a new name after a St. Louis restaurant called Blood & Sand sued in federal court, alleging trademark infringement.

The Buffalo restaurant, at 333 Franklin St., has announced it would open Aug. 15. In a Facebook posting Friday, restaurant staff solicited suggestions for a new name. Joshua Miles, an owner, said the staff has gathered about six solid possibilities to choose from, and will settle on a new name soon.

The lawsuit, filed Wednesday in St. Louis, states that the St. Louis business owns the trademark to the name. It’s an upscale, members-only restaurant that specializes in “unique cocktails and dishes,” the suit says. It opened in 2011.

After talking to the owners of Blood & Sand in St. Louis, “we have all determined at the end of the day that it would hurt both parties, in terms of individualism and individuality. So we are changing our name, and in the process of doing so,” Miles said.

The process should be complete by early next week, and the Aug. 15 opening remains unchanged, he said. “Nothing is affected but the signs and a DBA.”

The suit demands that the Buffalo restaurant stop using the name, choose another name and take other steps including paying damages. A customer alerted Blood & Sand ownership of the Buffalo restaurant July 12, the suit says.

Retrofitted: One Just Pizza is striking a blow for accuracy. The Just Pizza franchise store at 5445 Transit Road, Clarence, is under renovation and will reopen in August as Just Pizza & Wing Co., said Mark D. Campanella, Just Pizza marketing director.

The move acknowledges that 25 flavors of wings are a big part of the draw, Campanella said, and signals a shift to a family-friendly sports bar atmosphere with flat-screen TVs and a craft beer and wine selection.
