Chelsea Dantonio (Lancaster) took a two-stroke lead after the first day of the New York State Golf Association Girls’ Amateur Championship.
Dantonio shot an even round of 73 with four birdies and four bogeys at the Ridgemont Country Club in Rochester. She leads Maren Cipolla (Lewiston) by two strokes with the final round scheduled for today.
Six players from Western New York are in the top 10 after the first day. Along with Dantonio and Cipolla are Sydney Shaw (Orchard Park) and Marah Penn (Hamburg), tied at third after rounds of 76 while Sarah Godfrey-Singleton (Depew) and Victoria Parker (Lewiston) are tied for ninth after rounds of 78.
In the Boys’ Amateur Championship, Jacob Mertz (Williamsville) is in third place after shooting a 6-over 78. The leader, Will Thomson (Pittsford) shot an eight-under 64.
Aidan Shaw (Orchard Park) and Ian Wagner (Medina) are tied for fourth after rounds of 80.
In the Junior Division, David Hanes (Elma) was tied for third after firing a one-under 71. Marc Holzhauer (Clarence Center) and Gregory Sibick (Williamsville) are tied for 10th.
