NORTH TONAWANDA – New “jelly bean” mulch will be applied Friday and Saturday at the playground of St. Paul Lutheran Church and Preschool, 453 Old Falls Blvd.
The safer fill will replace olod woodchips used at the playground, named in honor of the late Barbara Demmin, who taught at the now-closed elementary school from 1973 to 1992, when she died. The playground was constructed by volunteers in 1994 and dedicated in her memory.
The new mulch – rubbery and colored – will provide better protection for children and last longer. Demmin’s family has donated money for the purchase of eight tons of the mulch. Boy Scout Troop 184, which meets in the church, has volunteered for the project.
Work gets underway at 6 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday. Volunteers are asked to bring gloves, rakes, shovels and wheelbarrows. To volunteer, call the church at 692-3255.
