Why shouldn’t doctors be held accountable?

One would like to think that all doctors have respect for facts. So I was dismayed as I read the July 27 Another Voice by Matthew Phillips, M.D. He claims that a recent malpractice verdict is questionable, argues various conspiracies and then threatens that doctors may go on strike. Really?

First, there is no mention of what happened to the patient. (Remember the patient?) Second, if there was a verdict, then the doctor had his day in court and a chance to appeal, and doctors in New York already enjoy more protections against litigation than any other individual or corporation. Finally, don’t tell me that this profession should have less accountability when one of the biggest challenges in infection control is getting doctors to wash their hands.
