A former mail carrier convicted of destroying mail was spared prison time Wednesday.

Daniel Brautlacht, 20, of Cheektowaga, was sentenced to time served by Chief U.S. District Court Judge William M. Skretny.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Russell T. Ippolito Jr. said Brautlacht destroyed 31 pieces of mail while delivering on Davey Street in Buffalo in 2013. He said a neighbor on Brautlacht’s route witnessed him throwing the mail into the garbage.

Brautlacht committed these acts less than two weeks after beginning work at the U.S. Postal Service. His sentencing is the result of an investigation by the Postal Service’s Office of Inspector General.
