County employees ratify a new contract

Erie County employees represented by CSEA, who have labored without a contract since 2006, ratified a new deal with the county Wednesday by a 985-655 vote, the union announced.

“After eight years of strenuous and, at times, tenuous negotiations, CSEA is pleased to announce that our members have successfully ratified a new tentative contract,” said Denise Szymura, the union’s unit president.

The agreement will cover the years 2008-16 and includes wage increases for this year and the next two years as well as slight “cost-saving modifications to health insurance coverage,” the union reported.

The agreement between the union and Erie County resulted from negotiations overseen by a neutral third-party mediator who was a approved by the state Public Employment Relations Board.

“This agreement,” said Szymura, “represents an equitable compromise between the county and the union, and we hope that the county legislature will consider holding a special session in order to provide their approval to the agreement as soon as possible.”
