ChalkFest scheduled Aug. 2-3

Drawing pictures on the sidewalk or pavement isn’t usually welcomed, but chalk up this opportunity to some creative downtown minds.

The 500 Block Association of Main Street is sponsoring the third-annual ChalkFest Buffalo, featuring opportunities for participants to show off their artistic skills, while a crowd looks on. The free festival will be held Aug. 2-3, from noon to 6 p.m. both days, along Washington Street from Mohawk to Huron streets. In particular, Allpro Parking has donated its lot at Washington and Mohawk for use this year.

More than 130 “squares” of nine or 25 square feet, respectively, will be used for artwork, a four-fold increase from the 30 that were available the first year. Three three-dimensional artists are also participating. Additionally, 11 local nonprofits will be on site to share their missions and services, as well as the Buffalo Museum of Science.

This year’s theme is Dr. Seuss, and all proceeds from T-shirt sales and vendor fees will benefit the Theatre of Youth. Last year, more than 8,500 people attended the festival.
