James K. Ciroli, First Niagara Financial Group’s senior vice president and principal accounting officer, will resign from the bank effective Friday, the Buffalo-based bank said.

Ciroli will leave for an “executive position with another financial institution outside of First Niagara’s footprint,” First Niagara said. The bank did not disclose where Ciroli is headed.

Brian M. Dempsey, director of finance accounting, will be appointed interim corporate controller and principal accounting officer effective Friday. Dempsey was named director of finance accounting in January.

Ciroli joined First Niagara in late 2009, and he was named principal accounting officer earlier this year.
