Edmund P. Tyszka, retired teacher, veteran

SANBORN – Edmund Philip Tyszka, of Sanborn, a retired teacher, died Sunday in Mount St. Mary’s Hospital, Lewiston. He was 79.

Born in Brooklyn, he was a graduate of LaSalle Academy in Manhattan. He received his bachelor’s degree from Niagara University, served in the Army and earned his master’s degree from Canisius College.

He also did extensive course work in the doctoral program at the University at Buffalo.

Mr. Tyszka began his teaching career at Gaskill Junior High School in Niagara Falls, then taught English at Sweet Home High School in Amherst and was senior class adviser for more than 20 years, retiring in 1991. He also was an adjunct professor at Niagara University and Niagara County Community College.

He moved to Sanborn from Niagara Falls in 1981 and had been active in golf leagues.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, the former Joan Braas; four daughters, Maribeth Tanen, Laurel Mezzoprete, Cynthia Kuehn and Joann Inchiosa; and eight grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Vincent de Paul Parish at the St. Leo’s worship site, 2748 Military Road, Niagara Falls.
