Thieves targeting vehicles throughout Cheektowaga

It’s summertime and the pickings have been easy throughout Cheektowaga for opportunistic thieves, according to town police.

There’s been a surge, during the past several weeks, in the reported number of thefts from vehicles parked on the street or in private driveways, police said Monday. Most thefts occurred in the early hours of the morning, while unsuspecting victims were asleep.

“In almost all cases, the doors on the victimized vehicles had been left unlocked overnight,” said Assistant Police Chief Jim Speyer.

Police have stepped up patrols in both marked and unmarked cars, as well as on bicycles, Speyer said. Several arrests have been made.

Meanwhile, police are reminding residents to lock the doors to their vehicles and to store valuables out of sight.

Residents also are encouraged to look out of their windows occasionally and immediately report any suspicious people or activity to police. Don’t take any action or confront suspected thieves, police said.
