Leroy woman arrested for driving drugged at crash

WARSAW – A 37-year-old Leroy woman was arrested on charges of driving while impaired by drugs and unlawful possession of marijuana by State Police after she allegedly collided Wednesday with an oncoming vehicle on State Route 98 in the Town of Java.

Laurie J. Lerkins, traveling south on the state highway, allegedly failed to maintain her lane and struck the rear of a northbound car driven by a North Chili man. Neither was injured in the crash but Lerkins was charged with driving while impaired by drugs after tests at the State Police Station in Warsaw.

She was also charged with the marijuana count after a small amount of marijuana was found in her personal belongings. Lerkins was also charged with failing to keep right, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, unlicensed operation and failure to notify the State Department of Motor Vehicles of a change of address. She faces further proceedings in Java Town Court in several weeks.
