Town officials are on a mission to license pooches.
Last week, the Town Board voted to have a dog census performed and approved the creation of 10 part-time positions of assistant dog control officers.
Already, word is out about the push for dog licensing and Town Clerk Johanna Coleman said 190 new licenses were issued this month, compared to 83 for July 2013. “They’ve been coming in from all over the town,” she said.
Behind the strong push, in part, is a concern that many dogs are unlicensed and may not be vaccinated, leading to possible public health risks for all residents.
“It’s public safety and, number two, it’s the law,” Coleman said.
