Dark florals

As we move into August – somewhat hesitantly, for many of us – why not add a few dark florals to your wardrobe? The pretty patterns are an easy way to transition into September, when the weather is still warm. Clothing-wise, floral tops are just one way to go. You can also add a few dark florals to your decor – on table linens, pillow covers, even a small area rug.

Trend watch

Step aside “selfies.” Make room for some “shelfies.” This from the August issue of People StyleWatch magazine: “A cool new riff on the traditional selfie – and majorly trending on Instagram – is the ‘shelfie,’ a shared photo of items artfully arranged on a shelf or tabletop that gives people a glimpse of your personal taste,” said Margot Nason, of the Intelligence Group, which publishes, a trend newsletter. Shelfie images may include a vase of flowers displayed with several framed photographs, for example.

On the runway

Designer Mara Hoffman recently unveiled her Resort 2015 collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Miami Beach, Fla. According to a trend report, Hoffman – a Buffalo native – was inspired by her travels to Guatemala and its people, art, textiles, culture and landscape. Much of the striking swimwear collection is reversible – bikinis and one-piece swimsuits with bold prints on one side, solids on the other. Among the styles included in her collection: cropped rash guard swimsuits, a front lace-up bikini top with matching high-waisted bottoms and cut-out one pieces.

Show House search

The Junior League of Buffalo is looking for a home with historical and architectural value to be transformed into its 18th Decorators’ Show House next spring.

To be considered, the home must be located in the City of Buffalo (or within close proximity) and be at least 7,000 square feet with two staircases. It also should have a minimum of a two- to three-car garage, suitable yard space and off-street parking. The house will need to be vacant from Jan. 1 to June 1 so area decorators and craftsmen can work their magic. Show House will open to the public April 25 to May 17, 2015.

Anyone with a referral can call the Junior League Headquarters, 884-8865, or send an email to The JLB, in conjunction with The Buffalo News, has raised more than $3.7 million to benefit the Western New York community through revenue generated by its Show House.

And finally ...

“A bunch of roses is lovely, but so is a single bloom in a bud vase.”

Rachel Ashwell in her book, “The Shabby Chic Home” (Harper Design, $24.99).
