3 rescued after small boat crashes onto Buffalo Harbor breakwater

Three people were rescued Sunday from Lake Erie after their small boat crashed onto the breakwater at Buffalo Harbor. One of the three was thrown into the water.

The Coast Guard, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office and a good Samaritan helped rescue the people, according to the Coast Guard.

A report of an 18-foot boat grounded on the breakwater had been received by the Coast Guard at about 3:45 p.m.

According to the report, a woman was in the water, a man was on the boat and another woman was on the breakwater.

A Coast Guard crew went out in a response boat and a marine rescue unit responded from the Sheriff’s Office, but before they arrived, a good Samaritan saved the woman who was in the water.

The man in the boat jumped into the water and swam to the Sheriff’s rescue boat, where he joined the woman who was previously in the water. The other woman was able to climb from the breakwater onto the Coast Guard’s boat.

The three then were taken ashore at the harbor. The Coast Guard did not release their names or their hometowns.

The man suffered the only reported injury: a cut on his forehead that was treated by emergency responders at the harbor.

Because of weather conditions, the boat was not retrieved Sunday, but it is expected to be recovered today, the Coast Guard said.
