Lou Gehrig 12U Iron Horsemen defeated Ithaca 4-1 to win the Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth New York State Western Section Championship. The team is now competing in the Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth Mid-Atlantic Regional, Thursday-Monday in Spring City, Pa. The members of the team are Brian Aduddle, Jacob Anderson, Matt Barrali, Mitch Collura, Andrew Fairbrother, Jack Gilbert, Jack Gugino, Dillon Lobdell, David O’Donoghue, Andrew Orsini, Gunnar Weppner and Cam Zurat. Scott Fairbrother is head coach, and Bill Anderson and Brent Zurat are assistant coaches.

BASEBALL: American Legion Post 721 has a few select spots available for its 2015 team. Tryouts will be 6-8 p.m. Aug. 5 at Cazenovia Park, Diamond 2. BASKETBALL: Any high school-eligible girl player interested in trying out for the Section VI BCANY Games should attend a tryout at 4 p.m. Sunday at Eden High School and at 5 p.m. Monday at Cardinal O’Hara High School. FOOTBALL: The Town of Hamburg Department of Youth, Recreation and Senior Services is accepting registrations for its NFL Flag Football program for boys and girls ages 6-8 and 12-14 (by Sept. 1). Preseason team development is set for Aug. 20-Aug. 21, with a scrimmage game on Aug. 23. Games will be one hour each, between 9 a.m. (first game) and 1 p.m. (last game).
