Karl D. Fiebelkorn, associate professor of pharmacy practice in the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, received the 2014 Bowl of Hygeia Award for outstanding community service. The award is sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association Foundation and the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, with support from Boehringer Ingelheim. The award recognizes pharmacists who possess outstanding records of civic leadership in their communities and encourages pharmacists to take active roles in the affairs of their respective communities.


YMCA Buffalo Niagara promoted Jennifer Benson to membership director; Katarina Llanas Manuse to wellness director; and Chris Deck to program director. All three employees will now work at the Independent Health Family Branch YMCA. Benson has been the membership director at the Ken-Ton Family YMCA since July 2013. She is a graduate of Buffalo State College. Llanas Manuse previously worked part time at the Niagara Falls Family YMCA and the Independent Health Family Branch YMCA as a group fitness instructor since 2012. Llanas Manuse graduated from the University of Wisconsin. Deck is a graduate of Brockport State College.

Company Connections

Just Pizza Franchise Systems reached an agreement with a new franchisee group to operate its location at 5445 Transit Road in Clarence. The location is currently closed for extensive remodeling and is scheduled to reopen in mid to late August as a Just Pizza & Wing Co. The new franchisees are Sam Carubba of Carubba Collision and Brendan Chiarilli.


Avox Systems, Lancaster, was awarded a $103,158 federal contract for safety and rescue equipment from the U.S. Army Contracting Command, Warren, Mich.


Buffalo-based Merchants Insurance Group participated in the annual agent satisfaction survey conducted by the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of New York. Merchants ranked first in commercial lines among “super regional carriers” and third among all commercial lines carriers in the state.


Hospice Buffalo of Western New York received a donation of nearly $17,000 from a group of Praxair Inc. employees and the company’s Global Giving Program. Employees from the Praxair Technology Center, located in the Town of Tonawanda, made the donation in memory of Praxair staff and family members who were cared for by the organization. Since 2007, Praxair employees have contributed almost $45,000 to Hospice.
