Harsh response to children shows a lack of humanity

I am embarrassed at the reaction of many Americans at the children who flee terrorism and wretched conditions in their homes for hope and solace in America. Some call it invasion, some falsely accuse them of spreading disease and urge armed troops to intercept and send them home.

These children flee terrifying things, often traveling alone on terrifying journeys, death haunting each step. Their loving parents launch them on these perilous journeys rather than witness their sure destruction in the violence of their home villages. Sadder, some are already homeless refugees and many orphans.

America has endless wealth, is one of the least densely populated countries in the world and we have the ability to care for most of these refugees, but we lack charity or perhaps need some charitable awakening.

We invaded Afghanistan to pursue the hated leader of a cult of Muslims. We invaded Iraq on a false theory of weapons of mass destruction. In these instances we sought to impose our culture on others, spent billions of dollars, built incredibly massive killing machines that contributed to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people for purposes we still search our souls about.

We owe humanity for these our sins and should make penance by resolving this mess without turning those sad children into permanent numbers in refugee camps. If you are religious, think of these children as the image of God sent among us. If you are not religious, let’s just adopt and educate them rather than turn them into enemies in 20 or 30 years.
