Schumer weighs in on dumping case

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer says an upcoming ruling by the U.S. Department of Commerce about alleged “dumping” by a Russian company could have implications for Globe Specialty Metals’ plant in Niagara Falls.

Schumer outlined his concerns in a letter to Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker. A ruling is expected this week on an investigation into whether a Russian exporter was selling an iron alloy – called ferrosilicon – in U.S. markets at artificially low prices. The senator said that practice threatens U.S. makers of the product such as Globe, which has about 100 employees at its area plant.

The Commerce Department in a preliminary ruling in March found no wrongdoing.
