TopSpin exhibit at Castellani features local artists

LEWISTON – The Castellani Art Museum’s TopSpin series continues through Aug. 24 with an exhibit titled “Elizabeth Lillian LaBarge: Surgery of the Spectacle.”

The series of solo exhibitions at the museum on the Niagara University campus features emerging regional artists and is sponsored by Tops Markets.

LaBarge said her drawing are a combination of well- known art, historical, religious and contemporary narratives that permeate our lives through the mass media. She said her work “exposes the spectacle” by creating over-the-top theatrical scenes that address the psychosocial power dynamics and the “image of women as spectacle.”

Her large charcoal drawings focus on the images surrounding femininity, while incorporating art historical references and psychoanalysis. She strives to combine the familiar and unfamiliar – a cognitive dissonance between attraction and intimidation. The art attempts to draw the viewer close, while at the same time creating a sense of unease due to the disturbing subject matter.

LaBarge was born in Potsdam in 1990. She received a bachelor of fine arts degree with a minor in creative arts therapy from Potsdam State College.

This year, she is completing her education with a master of fine arts degree from the University at Buffalo.
