Layoffs to begin Oct. 13 at Newfane hospital

NEWFANE – Eastern Niagara Hospital informed its employees this week that layoffs at its Newfane site will begin Oct. 13.

The 90-day warning, required by law, was sent to almost all employees because the hospital doesn’t know yet exactly who will be let go, CEO Clare A. Haar said.

The hospital intends to close inpatient services at the Newfane site, transferring all of those services to the larger Lockport location. The equivalent of 60 full-time workers will be let go, Haar said, but seniority and bumping rights in the union contracts make it hard to say who will be laid off.

The Newfane site employs 193 people: 88 full-time, 62 part-time and 43 per diem.

Newfane will continue to offer physical and occupational therapy, dialysis, blood drawing and radiology, along with what Haar said will be “a 24-hour emergency room.” The cuts were announced July 2; Haar said their exact effective date is undetermined.
