BATAVIA – Genesee Community College is now accepting applications for a new food processing technology degree program to meet the job demands of a growing local industry.

Opportunities in the program were highlighted in a recent day-long information workshop at the Batavia main campus and its six satellite sites in three adjoining counties.

Students who complete the two-year associate degree program will be qualified for food manufacturing facilities. The 12-week session begins Sept. 23. There is an Aug. 4 deadline for a $500 scholarship.

Batavia is believed to have the only food processing business park in the state. Two yogurt makers – Alpina Foods and Mueller Quaker – began production of the new popular Greek-style yogurt last year with a combined payroll of about 250 in the Genesee Valley Agri-Business Park.

Yancey’s Fancy, a cheese maker in the town of Pembroke that is planning an expansion of its manufacturing operation and retail store, offers other job opportunities.
