Bills General Manager Doug Whaley said today second-year quarterback EJ Manuel needs to take a step forward. But Whaley is confident enough in the Bills' roster that he thinks Manuel will get plenty of help in having a successful season.
Whaley on EJ: "I believe he’s got to take a step. Now a big step? Depends on your categorization of big. I would say take care of the ball. And the one thing he did last year that he needs to do this year is when we need him the most, to come through and make the plays. He did that last year. So we think with our defense, our running game, I’m not going to say he has to manage it, but he just gets better and keeps on improving. He doesn’t have to feel the weight of the world on the shoulders and he has to go out and win it. We’ve surrounded him with some people where if he does his job we should be OK."
What is Whaley looking for from Manuel in training camp? "I want to see him be in more control of the huddle, the offense, and a command and a presence out there that we saw in , by the time we leave training camp, you should see a guy that’s standing tall in the huddle and quick and decisive with his decision-making."
