Hamburg woman found in road was hit-and-run victim, police say

Jennifer Spillman Martello, the Hamburg woman who was found unconscious on Big Tree Road in the early hours of Tuesday morning and died later that day, almost certainly was the victim of a hit-and-run motor vehicle accident, police said Thursday evening.

“The Medical Examiner’s Office along with members of the Town of Hamburg Police Department’s Accident Investigation Unit and detective bureau have determined with a high degree of confidence that Jennifer Martello was the victim of a hit and run motor vehicle accident,” the Police Department said in a posting on its Facebook page.

An autopsy was conducted Thursday but “lab results on the clothing are pending,” the department said.

Hamburg police, were awaiting test results that include items collected from the scene on the 3600 block of Big Tree Road.

Police have said there were indications a vehicle may have caused her injuries, but the autopsy was delayed in order to provide time for harvesting organs from the 29-year-old woman, who was placed on life support in Erie County Medical Center.

In a statement issued by town police, all residents and businesses along Big Tree and Bayview roads from Lake Shore Road to South Park Avenue are asked to check any surveillance video they have from 11:30 p.m. Monday to 1 a.m. Tuesday. Anyone with video from that time period can contact police at 648-5111, Ext. 2502.

Police first became aware of Martello when they received a 911 call from a passer-by at about 12:35 a.m. Tuesday reporting that there was a body in the roadway.

Clothing obtained from the scene was submitted to the Erie County Central Police Services Forensic Crime Laboratory in the hope of obtaining “transfer evidence, DNA, etc.,” according to police.

“We appreciate all the information we’ve received to date and will continue to update ... as new and relevant information becomes available, Hamburg police said.”

Sam Martello, the woman’s husband, has said his wife was upset at not getting a job at a local nursing home and left the house to go for a drink late that night, despite his objections.
