Daemen tabs Niland as AD

It’s been a busy summer at Daemen College as an athletic director has been named and the NCAA Division II membership committee has advanced the college to Provisional Year status.

Bridget Niland, whose family has a long history in college athletics, is the new athletic director. Niland, a native of Williamsville, joined the Daemen College faculty in 2006. She replaces William Morris, who has left to pursue other opportunities.

Since 2011, Niland has served as Daemen’s faculty athletic representative, acting as the athletic department’s liaison with faculty members, while also working to further Daemen’s move to Division II.

Niland has served as an associate professor of business administration at Daemen while also overseeing the sports management specialization and business law curriculum.

“As the only NCAA Division II institution in the greater Buffalo area, I believe Daemen provides an excellent opportunity for both fans and future student-athletes to engage in and follow college sports that allows for the balance between athletics and academic success,” Niland said in a news release.

Niland earned bachelor’s, master’s and law degrees from the University at Buffalo, where she was a standout on the school’s cross country and track and field teams.

Niland’s father, the late Joe Niland Sr., is a former basketball coach at Canisius College in addition to being a scout for the Buffalo Braves in the 1970s. Niland coached the Griffs from 1948 to 1953.

Bridget’s brothers, Joe Niland Jr. and Dave Niland, are both college basketball coaches. Joe is the coach and athletic director at the University of Mobile (Ala.), while Dave works at Penn State-Behrend.
