Charles A. McCracken, of Clarence, died Saturday in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst, after a short illness. He was 84.
Born in Rochester, he attended Canisius High School and earned an English degree from Canisius College. He served as a chaplain’s assistant in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a superintendant of claims for Aetna Insurance for 37 years.
A diocesan president of the Holy Name Society, he served two terms, 1985 and 1986. He was president for the Parents Guild at St. Mary’s High School and also a council member of St. Louis Parish. He was a longtime volunteer for Hospice Buffalo, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Sisters Hospital.
His first wife, Sally Bartz McCracken, died in 1984.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, the former Joyce Bernhart; three sons, Patrick, Terrence and Timothy; a stepson, Kevin Paul; two daughters, Margaret Addesa and Suzanne; a stepdaughter, Joyann Carroll; a sister, Mary Catherine; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Louis Catholic Church, 35 Edward St.
