Lockport homeowner burned in garage fire

LOCKPORT – A Lockport man was burned on his right hand and arms in an attempt to rescue a dog Thursday from his burning garage at 10 Hoover Parkway.

Todd Kaiser, 52, was taken to Erie County Medical Center for treatment, Fire Department Capt. Patrick K. Brady said. The dog perished, but Kaiser succeeded in rescuing another. Two cats in the house also survived. Brady said a fireman closed the door on the room they were in after opening a window so the animals would have air.

Brady said Kaiser, who was home alone, was napping when he was awakened about 5 p.m. by dogs barking in the burning garage.

The garage was destroyed and the flames spread to the house, gutting the family room and leaving smoke and water damage elsewhere. Brady said the cause of the fire is undetermined, and no damage estimate was set.
