Federal funding totaling $364,320 is going to nine fire departments in Chautauqua County and $47,785 to Allegany Volunteer Fire Department, Cattaraugus County.

Lakewood Fire Department applied for this funding on behalf of itself and Ashville, Busti, Celeron, Clymer, Frewsburg, Jamestown, Kiantone, Panama departments. The money, allocated through the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, will be used to purchase mobile radio units for fire trucks to enhance communications during multiple-alarm fires. The funding also will help Chautauqua County install its new $6 million radio system, soon to be operational.

The Allegany Fire Department will purchase five self-contained breathing apparatuses and 10 new sets of turnout gear.

Sens. Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, both D-N.Y., announced the grants Thursday.
