NIAGARA FALLS – Police responded to the Harry F. Abate School on Tuesday after 45 copper coils were stolen from 30 ventilation units at a construction site at the school at 1625 Lockport St.

Police found hedge cutters next to the units and a brass bar that was used to pry apart the units to gain access to the coils. The estimated loss and damage totaled $8,500, authorities said.

An employee of the construction company said the theft occurred between Friday and Monday and noted that the fence had been left unlocked. He said the units were intended to be removed for reuse at a power plant.
