Bulletin Board for July 8

The West Side Rowing Club has been awarded a $2,500 grant through the Buffalo Bills Youth Foundation, funded through the Ralph C. Wilson Foundation, to offer six full scholarships for Buffalo school children. This is combined with an anonymous source offering up to 20 scholarships in West Side’s Summer Crew Camp.

The camps provide hands-on introduction to rowing for kids 12-17 years old (or entering sixth grade), teaching basic rowing technique and boat skills in a low-intensity environment. Session I is now through July 25 and Session II is July 28 to Aug. 15, with camp running Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon. No experience necessary. For a scholarship application, email row.west.side@gmail.com, call 881-9797, or go to WSRC.org.

Meanwhile, the West Side Rowing Club will host its 101st Annual West Side Invitational Regatta at 9 a.m. on Sunday. Teams from WNY and Ontario will compete in eight-person shells, as well as fours, pairs, doubles, and singles in the 1,500-meter time trial event on the Black Rock Canal. Crews will begin at the Ferry Street Lift Bridge, racing south to the finish line in front of the Rowing Club. The event is free to the public.

The event will help educate player and parents on proper equipment fitting, concussion awareness, proper “Heads Up” tackling techniques, and heat preparedness and hydration. SOCCER: The 30th annual Northern Custom Services Niagara Pioneer Soccer League International Tournament will take place July 12 and 13 at Fort Niagara.
