Amherst police identify woman killed on Sheridan Drive

Amherst Police have identified the pedestrian who was killed on Sheridan Drive Saturday evening as a 67-year-old Clarence woman.

Vanessa G. Rugg was struck by a Ford Explorer when she tried to cross Sheridan Drive near Country Parkway at about 8:40 p.m.

Amherst police said she was not carrying identification. Officers found her car Sunday morning parked in a driveway on a side street near the scene of the accident.

Capt. Patrick M. McKenna of the department’s Accident Investigation Unit said it is not clear why Rugg was in the roadway.

Sheridan Drive was closed for periods on Saturday night and on Sunday morning while investigators collected evidence and photographed the scene.

No charges have been filed against the 61-year-old driver of the 2010 sport utility vehicle.
