Garden party

Florals are a natural for summer. This season, both small- and large-scale prints are blooming on just about every article of clothing you can find: wrap dresses, sneakers, handbags, jackets, pants and swimwear, for starters.

Here are a few tips for wearing them from Los Angeles celebrity stylist and designer Jen Rade, as reported by Maria Martin from

• If you’re trying for a soft and feminine look, pick florals on a floaty, breezy fabric like chiffon, and pair with a soft knit.

• If you go for a large-scale floral print, it’s helpful to belt the waist to break up the pattern and not lose the body shape.

• Not every floral pattern must be bold in color. Pair a floral in black and white with a pop of color, perhaps a yellow shoe.

• “In general, I think smaller-print florals are best on petite people. The larger scale tends to be best on taller or fuller-figured shapes,” Rade said.

What’s so funny?

We cracked up at some numbers we spotted in the July issue of Real Simple magazine in an article called “You Just Gotta Laugh”: 10 to 40 (the calories burned in 10 to 15 minutes of daily laughing); 15 to 20 (the estimated number of times a day that an adult laughs); 103 (the ideal number of words in a joke).

The word’s out

It may not be the biggest decorating trend on the planet but big letters forming words are showing up in home decor. This spring, Marshalls had a decorative accessory made of block letters spelling out the word “WASH” for your stylish bath. And the July issue of Better Homes and Gardens features a foyer in which big letters placed on a table spell out a friendly “HELLO” to visitors.

Fashion tip

When is a woman too old to wear a jumpsuit? That’s the question that a reader asked Ellen Warren, who writes the “Dear Answer Angel Ellen” fashion Q&A for the Chicago Tribune.

Her answer: “You’re never too old to wear a jumpsuit – as long as it’s not crazy tight and doesn’t make you look like you’re auditioning for a Catwoman role. Look for styles that don’t cling. And here’s one important consideration: Remember that with these one-piece styles, every time you go to the ladies’ room you’re going to practically have to disrobe. And that’s kind of a pain.”

And finally ...

“My mother loved jewelry. I remember being a kid and watching my mama put tons of rings on her fingers. I got that idea from her. She does that to this day.”

Singer Kelly Rowland, talking about her passion for jewelry in the July issue In Style magazine.
