HARTLAND – A Medina man was arrested Friday when his target-shooting session with exploding targets caused injuries to 44-year-old bystander struck by shrapnel, authorities said.

Anthony J. Nappa, 29, of South Main Street, was charged with second-degree reckless endangerment in the incident on Seaman Road.

According to the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, the shooter used a half-pound mixture of a legal explosive called Tannerite and placed it atop some logs before shooting the target with a high-powered rifle. The explosion caused one of the logs to shatter, sending splinters 60 feet, striking Ellana Eberhardt, 44, of Williamsville in the arm, chest and head, deputies said. She was flown by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center for treatment, deputies added.
