LEWISTON – A 4-year-old boy who was unresponsive when pulled from a pool Friday evening had hoked on food before falling into the water, Niagara County sheriff’s deputies said.

The incident occurred at 7:45 p.m. at a home on Saunders Settlement Road. The boy had been eating by an inground, backyard pool when fell into the water, deputies said. The boy had turned blue and wasn’t breathing when pulled from the pool, deputies added, A resident helped dislodge food from the boy’s throat and, by the time emergency crews arrived, he had regained consciousness.

The boy was examined by the ambulance crew and given a clean bill of health, deputies added.
