Dropped license plate leads to DWI hit-and-run driver

A license plate left at the scene of an injury accident early this morning led to the arrest of an Elma man, Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard reported.

The accident was reported at about 1:45 a.m. on Rice Road in Elma. Deputies John Szczepanski and Brandon Stott responded and discovered the driver of one of the vehicles involved in the incident had fled.

The deputies found a license plate and used it to track down the driver at his home in Elma a few minutes later. He was identified as John R. Wilczewski, 40.

Wilczewski submitted to a breath test which indicated his blood alcohol content was .16 percent, twice the legal limit. He was processed and released to a third party.

Details about the injured person were not immediately available.
