Full scholarships for summer camps at West Side Rowing Club are available for Buffalo Public Schools students.
The camps provide hands-on introduction to rowing for kids 12-17 years old (or entering 6th grade), teaching basic rowing technique and boat skills in a low-intensity environment. Session I is July 7 to July 25 and Session II is July 28 to Aug. 15, with camp running Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon. No experience necessary. Last year the Orchard Park 10-and-under team won the District 1 Championship in Little League Baseball. With 11 players moving up from that team, Orchard Park recently won the district 11U title, sweeping through four tournament games unbeaten. That included a 4-1 triumph over Central Amherst in the championship game after defeating Mel Ott of Williamsville, 9-3, in the semifinal game. Orchard Park will move on to the Section 1 championships in Rochester next weekend.
The team included: Colin Giancaterino, Kyle Kuszewski, Kyle Zelasko, David Miller, James Velasquez, Blake Breidenstein, Tyler Piritano, Connor Phalon, Connor Bowman, Jake Janus, Bryce Schreiner, Carson Senfield, Matt Wagner and Charles Bartolotti. Coaches are Ted Phalon, Scott Schreiner and Jeff Zelasko.
BASEBALL: The Police Athletic League of Buffalo opens its 64th season of baseball on Monday with games at Delaware and Cazenovia parks. Championship games will be held at Coca-Cola Field on Aug. 15, and for the first time ever, there will be a PAL All-Star Game prior to the championships. For more info on PAL, call 851-4615.
TENNIS: The Ken-Ton Senior Tennis League is accepting registration for summer outdoor tennis, in recreational, co-ed and doubles categories. The league plays Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Parker Tennis Courts in Lincoln Park. Call Stan at 873-9800 for more information.
