Virginia L. McMurtry, Grand Island school nurse

Feb. 14, 1931 – June 11, 2014

Virginia L. “Ginny” McMurtry of Youngstown, a longtime school nurse, died June 11 in Clare Bridge of Niagara in North Tonawanda after a long illness. She was 83.

Born in Rochester, the former Virginia L. Downing, attended local schools in Avon and graduated with a degree in nursing from Alfred University in 1953.

For 35 years, she worked as a school nurse practitioner for the Grand Island School District. During her employment, she continued her education and received a master’s degree in nursing and a school nurse practitioner certification from the University at Buffalo in 1981.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lewiston, a member of the Youngstown Yacht Club for over 30 years, and former president and member of the Youngstown Civic Guild.

A lifelong avid reader, she was a member of numerous book clubs and the Lewiston Study Club. She enjoyed sailing and traveling abroad.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Carl; two daughters, Amy Langlois and Karen; a son, Paul; a sister, Betty Courser; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in First Presbyterian Church of Lewiston, 505 Cayuga St., Lewiston.
