Tonawanda man awarded Bronze Star

A Town of Tonawanda man who served as a front-line medic in the Battle of the Bulge received a Bronze Star and other medals Wednesday during a ceremony at the Town of Tonawanda Veterans Memorial at Walter Kenney Field.

Cpl. Lawrence Titzler was assigned to the 78th Infantry “Lightning” Division, where he became a medic with B Company, 303rd Medical Battalion. In October 1944, he arrived in Europe, just a couple months before the Battle of the Bulge.

Titzler, retired assistant principal at Tonawanda High School, received his medals from Rep. Brian Higgins.

The Veterans Memorial tonight at 6:30 p.m. will host another ceremony, to honor the town’s Korean War veterans. It will be followed by two hours of patriotic music by the American Legion Band of the Tonawandas and a fireworks display.
