An Erie County Sheriff’s Office fire investigator fell through the second floor of a West Seneca home early Tuesday when he was trying to determine where and how a blaze started in the residence, authorities said.

Undersheriff Mark N. Wipperman said Investigator Steve Meerboth suffered non-life threatening injuries in the fall.

Meerboth was treated in the emergency room at Erie County Medical Center and discharged to spend a short time on the status of injured on duty.

Residents of the house in the 800 block of Union Road were not home at the time of the fire, about 4:30 a.m. An investigation into what caused the fire was continuing.
