The Niagara Frontier Volleyball’s 15-under became the first team from upstate New York to win a national title on Saturday, bettering a field of 48 teams as they captured the National Division of the Girls Junior National Championships in Minneapolis.
Setter Meghan Neelon (Clarence) was named the Tournament MVP while defensive specialist Lindsay Proctor (Grand Island) and outside hitter Samantha Burgio (Eden) were All-Tournament. The players completed the four-day tournament winning all 11 of their matches, going 22-4 in the games. Along the way they upset the No. 1 seeded team and last year’s champion from Northern Kentucky, 23-25, 25-19, 15-3.
Members of team were: Jessica Kranz, Karley King, Caitlyn Meyer, Julie Milbrand, Alexis Novak, Ellen Paddock, Julia Panepinto, Neelon, Proctor and Burgio. The coaches were: Stephen Pierce, Angela McGinnis and Kathy Neelon.
The 15-under team was one of three Niagara Frontier teams participating in the tournament. Its 16-under and 17-under teams begin play today and Monday. The NFVB 15-1s, 16-1s and 17-1s each earned a bid to the tournament back in May.
