A suspicious drum led Grand Island firefighters to take action at about 6:50 a.m. today. A 55-gallon drum wrapped in black plastic was left at the Grand Island Town Highway Department in the outside drop-off area where residents can discard televisions and computers.
The Brighton Volunteer Fire Department Haz Mat team arrived on the scene and secured, opened and tested the drum; they found it contained residue that seemed to be a petroleum-based product. They then put the drum into a safety container for disposal.
Employees arriving for work found the drum.
“It was an unknown drum, dropped off by unknown person, with unknown contents,” according to the Grand Island Fire Company.
