D’Youville College has built a parking lot for more than 30 cars on the site of a landmark church that was demolished in 2011.
The former St. Mary’s-on-the-Hill Episcopal Church, built in 1893, was closed in 1993 and was abandoned for years before falling into disrepair. An emergency demolition was ordered in 2011 following complaints that an adjoining parsonage was ready to collapse into neighbors’ yards.
In 2013, the college bought the parcel at the corner of Niagara and Vermont streets from the City of Buffalo for $29,000. Built into the design of the gated lot is a display with the original bell that hung in the tower of the church.
A dedication ceremony for the bell will be held Wednesday.
The display includes a plaque with a picture of the old church and a summary of its history.
